Most important is the student- teacher relationship, even when we sometimes blame too big classes, or not having an assistant. But acting like being a friend doesn't work either. I don't think that general rules work for all teachers because we're all different. The teacher should always continue learning new ways of getting the students' attention to make a lesson more interesting for all. Not just for those who usually listen. Observing each others' lessons helps a lot to see any mistakes that some of us might make. Finally, it makes no sense to "finish up an English book" if half of the taught material isn't understood.
