I have to teach social studies this year and I am facing the problem that the books we are using are far too advanced, and the topics are to difficult for the kids to relate to them.
Does anyone have experience in teaching social studies? What topics could I use, where can I get some info/worksheets.
the only topics I could come up with until now were: family, needs-wants, goods and services, school, community helpers, places in a community. How can I make the subjects a little interesting especially for grades 1-3?
Any help or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Here's the Basic Education Core Curriculum BE 2551 (2008 AD).

At a primary English Program school I worked in, we used the Social Studies books from Pelangi.

Thanks Stamp & Po3try. I have been managing to put together some reasonable lessons due to the help of people on this site.

    Cheers

Ok, I have a question. Is there anyone out there that is teaching Social Studies at the Mattayom 1 & 2 levels? If so what textbook have you been using? I was told at first that the books were "coming".....now it seems they wont be coming, probably at all. I couldnt even get a name for a book from them. I am aware of a Prathom 6 level social studies book that is in English, but for the levels i need I havent seen anything. It would be handy to have one even if only to use as a guide. At the moment I am getting info from the net and making PowerPoints. Its not the end of the world, but a book would be very helpful....

    Anyone????

Well...Geography is certainly part of it. In the curriculum there is also stuff about Buddhism, history etc. Its not impossible at all to make my own lessons. Anyway, I have had it confirmed again that a book is "coming"......

    Cheers all.

    Geography sure
    People that changed the world
    People that changed Thailand
    World's --------------- cities
    Thai holidays
    Thai History, regional history
    Basics civics, constitution, voting
    Compare/contrast countries

IMO you will waste less time creating your own show rather than digging around for some stale lesson plan and wretched worksheets.

I'm sure some great ss books out there. But that's the problem for you -out there.

    SS envy :righton:
