My 5 years Thai driving licence runs out in August.

So this is kind of a reminder for me by posting this Thread.

I am looking forward to getting the 'smart' new style licence when I go to renew.
Should be easy to do, I haven't heard of any problems with this.

Anyway, I am not sure if I have to wait till August to do this or can I do it say before in July?

Anyone done a renewal before and did you do it on the same month or before it ran out?

I tried to do it 1 month early and they refused. told me to come back when it had expired. that was in Bangkok. maybe other places will let you? remember to take most of the day off, it takes about 2 - 3 hours to get everything done. (ie watch a video for an hour or so then different tests, depending on how many are there it can take a few hours).

I had heard the same, but I wasn't sure so I asked...thanks as it sounds about the same...
But I already have a licence so why do I need to do any of that?

Every one has to (Thais included) New rule I guess. I went at the same time as one of the Thai teachers at my school and he tried all the tricks to get out of it, saying he was a government official etc, they just said everyone must do it. One guy tried to leave half way through the film on the pretense of going to the loo, the guy in charge told him he would have to sit through it all again. You are given a card which has to be signed and stamped by each tester. Video, Brake test, colour test, and a couple more.

then they take your pic and all is done for another five years. Oh and a medical cert.

That's been recently changed. You now have to renew before the license expires.

hahahaha it's got English subtitles, they are worth reading just for the fun of reading the translation. " Dear, you know we must wear our seat belts because it's the law, and we don't want to be in trouble with the police" "Darling don't park near the school gate, you know the children can't see the oncoming traffic, we must park here and walk to the gate to pick up little Somchai"

I reckon the Thai's thought I was demented, giggling to myself at the subtitles.

Hi. I just renewed my DL a month ago. I didn't have to take any new tests or watch any video. I wonder if it is a typically Thai system; applied differently in different regions? I took mine in Chonburi.

I renewed car and bike last year, about 2 months before they expired.

I just handed in copies of my visas, doctor's note and fee. Two new pictures and away I went.

The whole process, about an hour.

No tests or video to watch?

Please keep us updated on this, as I said I and a few Thai teachers had to do the tests and watch the video :-(
