Fifty people have been killed, including the assailant, and at least 53 injured in an attack inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, in the US state of Florida, according to police.

Officials said on Sunday morning that the shooter, who was armed with assault-type rifle, handgun and some type of other device, died in a shootout with the police force at the Pulse nightclub.

Florida authorities said the attack was being treated as an "act of domestic or international terrorism".

"We are investigating this from all parties' perspective as an act of terrorism," said Danny Banks, special agent in charge of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

And they believe that it was a terror act. Holy Jihad. Nothing against Afghani, but only when handy.

And still the US fail to see the connection between their slack firearms laws and these all too often mass murders.

This was an act of unadulterated evil. Frightening. I stand firmly with the victims and their bereaved loved ones in commiseration and sadness.

Too many Cowboys around. I hope we don't need metal scanner at Thai schools in the near future.

How many kids got killed just because of a pair of sneakers? :angry2

And the killers weapon of choice was an AR-15 rifle. Same gun that guy shot 20 children and 6 adults with in 2012..AND the same gun James Holmes used to murder 12 and wound 70 in a cinema..
How can a country allow this, I mean who needs one of these?

Yep its madness and a gun like this can do so much more damage than a revolver as we have again found out in this story. Protecting the second amendment has gone insanely too far.
Sad story indeed and RIP the victims.

I lived in Orlando immediately prior to moving to China. This is extremely horrific.

As to the role the 2nd amendment played in this, it is pretty clear that the authorities knew who this cat was, but because of the gun lobby (NRA) being in the pocket of a good number of congressmen there are no laws that would have impeded his ability to get a gun. Yes, it is ****ed up, and no there is not a thing that will be done about it. The gun makers in the US have sold more guns while Obama has been in office than in any other 8 year period, ever. Gun sales might go up even more as gun nuts will now cite domestic islamic terrorists as a need for more guns.

It is likely this man's religion played a role in what happened, but so far as I know the Quran does not call for punishment of homosexuality. The Hadith is much more clear, with varying punishments that should be meted out, but invariably all end in death. What is clear however, this idiot had no authority within his religion to do what he did.

However, the d-bag behind this was married just for a few months and his ex-wife detailed accounts of spousal abuse and said he was 'unstable'.

What happened here is the result of one man hellbent on being a dbag because he couldn't process the idea that 2 men could be in love. F*ck him, and f*ck whatever led him to this.

    Sad stuff.

    P.S.
The president's response is mad. This is an attack on all Americans, not just the LGBT community. And while I completely agree with gun law reform, it is abundantly clear this @$$hole had an IED, and would have used that in the absence of a gun. Problems should be dealt with as they arise, and should be labeled as they are. Pretending that this fool's radical misunderstanding of his religion had nothing to do with the attack is absolutely stupid.

The question now becomes, where was the NSA when they were needed most? For the 3rd time (Boston, San Bernardino, and Orlando) in as many chances in the past 3 years and 2 months they failed to stop a terrorist attack on US soil...

Great post, one of the more meaningful posts that I have actually read on this heinous atrocity. I would suggest that one of the reasons the assassin may have picked on the LGBT community is because of personal insecurities about his own sexuality as opposed to a misinterpretation of Islam.

It appears now he may have been a regular at this bar, and had used several gay dating apps. It seems his religious beliefs did not square with his biology. His professed 'allegiance' to ISIL looks nothing more than an attempt to direct attention away from his gay tendencies.

That not being comfortable in his own skin may have been what led to the events make it all the more heartbreaking.

Thanks for posting this, Ramses. It doesn't make it any more understandable. It remains a heinous crime. It's one sick f%%%ing world.

There's lots of CNN footage appearing on the net suggesting things aren't what they seem. The conspiracy theory guys are out.
Some people are asking why are there victims being carried 200 yards towards the club? One victim is dropped by helpers as soon as the cameras appeared to stop filming.
Not my beliefs, just adding to the thread.
