Can I simply present myself at the relevant office in BKK and request a clearance certificate. I've lived here continuously since October 2008 though recently gave up my job. I'm looking to move to another country some time in the near future and anticipate some sort of police clearance might be necessary. Or do I have to wait and walk in with a piece of paper from a potential employer requesting clearance.

If you are getting a check for use outside of Thailand there is a separate clearance check. You'll be pleased to know this in a nice aircon office rather than the meat market normal application which is in a grim parking area. I think you need a supporting letter from an employer or similar in order to apply, so perhaps check the website before making the journey.
