IN A MOVE to discourage youths from smoking, the National Legislative Assembly yesterday raised the minimum age for young people to buy cigarettes to 20 years old from the current 18 years old.

Under the new Tobacco Control bill, anyone who sells cigarettes to under-age teenagers could be jailed for three months or fined up to Bt30,000 or both.

The new law also stipulates that people who sell cigarettes must be at least 18 years old and each cigarette pack must contain 20 cigarettes, prohibiting the sale of individual cigarettes.

I believe that laws in Thailand aren't much different than those from other countries. What differs is enforcement. The latter is a non-existing word in Thai vocabulary.

What a sick joke that people have to buy a whole box, the powerful tobacco industry has them all on their payroll.

Listening to all the new bs news about laws that will never be enforced is really boring.

it's more than a joke that people can't buy a few fags. And it shows the "quality of the current government."

Those people can't afford it to buy a whole box or carton.

Have you ever thought about that there's not one single word for yes in Thai?

Always a nice excuse if something doesn't turn out well. Chai Mai?
