English is Not All Around

    Agree completely. English is simply not necessary for the vast majority of Thais. And even in tourism, where most Thai English is used, I seriously doubt whether improved English would result in a higher number of tourists. Maybe improved Chinese would help ;-)

    We all know that teaching is supposed to start with a needs analysis. The implicit needs analysis for (the majority of) foreign English teachers in Thailand seems to be "I need the money, so they need English."

    It's scary that the students' English didn't get any better in times where almost all schools have foreign English teachers.
