Police have arrested an American citizen working as a teacher at an international school in Krabi province who is wanted under an arrest warrant issued in the United States on drug charges, an informed police source said.

The arrest of Alexander Jonathan Rosen was in response to a request from the United States embassy to national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda.

Pol Gen Chakthip subsequently ordered an investigation which found that Mr Rosen had entered and left Thailand on several occasions, the source said.

He first arrived in Thailand via Suvarnabhumi airport on Oct 31, 2015 and left through the same airport on Nov 2 of the same year.

Mr Rosen re-entered Thailand on May 24, 2016 via Krabi airport and left on July 22 through the Sadao immigration checkpoint in Songkhla Province.

On July 26 he again entered Thailand via the Sadao checkpoint and departed on Oct 15 from Krabi airport.

He returned to Thailand via Krabi on Oct 23 last year.

I don't understand why the trips in and out of the country are some sort of flag, could be visa runs or any number of things.

The guy is a total idiot, wearing a bright blue shirt and bright yellow tie.

He should have got himself a ten year visa to India.

He was teaching English so presumably, he's broke. Ah, the life of a drug baron...

I don't get it. Why would somebody who knew that he's WANTED by his country go to Thailand and become a teacher?

What did the guy do? Selling 3 grams of coke to a friend?

If they revoked his passport it must have been a big deal. I noticed the article made no mention.

The only caveat I can think to the above is if they knew for certain he was already abroad.

But again, if he's teaching he must have been small time and not very wise with his money.

It's not uncommon to be asked to surrender your passport pre trial in many types of cases or if defendant poses flight risk.

Why would a teacher need to make so many visa runs.

If you don't want to "qualify" at the local Immigration and you prefer to do visa runs, perhaps?

    Correct.
Example: Non O / Marriage Visa without the proof of the 400K requirement, you qualify for the one year visa but not to remain in the country and report at local immigration every 90 days. You do visa runs every 90 days instead.

I haven't seen any information that the guy is married to a Thai and believe that he just wanted to fly under the Radar.

    Well, obviously not deep enough.

School director insists screening process was done on teacher arrested on drug charges

    in General | January 27, 2017

The director of British international school of Krabi has defended that the school had properly checked the background of an American teacher arrested on drug charges in the United States and found him cleared of any criminal record.

Mrs Kwanta Sooksai, the school director, said on Friday that the screening process was undertaken when the American, Alexander Jonathan Rosen, applied for a job as English teacher at the school.

She added that Rosen also presented certifying documents from the Khuru Sapha teachers’ organization. However, she admitted that there might be a lapse of communication between US and Thai authorities when the US revoked Rosen’s passport and issued a warrant for his arrest on drug charges.

However, Mrs Kwanta assured the incident would not affect the school and parents of students still have confidence in the school.

Rosen was arrested by police at his rented house in Ao Nang after the US embassy in Bangkok requested help from the national police chief, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, for the arrest of the American on drug charges.

Rosen had been in and out of Thailand seven times since he first arrived via Suvarnabhumi airport on October 31, 2015.

On September 14, Rosen submitted an application to the Krabi immigration office for a temporary stay in Thailand to work as an English teacher at an international school in Krabi.

100 % sure they didn't ask for a Police Clearance Certificate. International school it is!

I still fail to see why coming and going out of Thailand half dozen times in a year and a half is some sort of flag. No one has permanent residency or an immigrant visa.

What sort of paperwork do you suppose he gave the school from the TCT? This is his first teaching gig as well.

I'd still like to know what his charges are.

He should have gone to India and got lost when or a country without extradition. Duh.
