    Good afternoon guys and gals.

My very good friend has been offered a position as academic director for the agency we both work for.
He has been asked to name his salary and I'm not sure what he should ask for.

He has a masters degree in linguistics and has been working for the company for 3 years.

He would be in charge of the whole of the companies academia which consists of schools in Phuket, Chonburi, Nonthaburi and Bangkok. He would be expected to visit these schools on a regular basis.

Can anyone give a rough estimate of what he should be looking for? He's currently on 50k as a EP teacher specialising in Science.

    Thanks for your input.

Is this a new position or is he taking over from someone? (i.e. Do they have a figure in mind already based on experience?)

A few topics that I'd want to discuss if I was negotiating the salary:
    - Level of responsibility/accountability - specific targets that need to be met?
    - Would travel expenses be paid separately or included in the salary. How often the travel would be and whether it would require staying at hotels or just making day trips (time away from home.)
    - Hours that he would be expected to be in the office. Holiday?
    - Extra duties? Would he be teaching to cover for sick/absent teachers, etc? (Not necessarily a bad thing, but worth knowing in advance if you're effectively going to be doing two jobs!)
    - How will bonus pay or salary raises be determined?

Travel expenses paid for separately, working Mon-Fri 8 till 4. Bonus 30k each year. 2k wage rise. Last person died and the position hasn't been filled for about a year.

I'm guessing complete control over what's taught in the school's. No covering classes unless every other option has been done.

    That is a lot of responsibility ... 115 - 150 a month.

Bonus should be performance based, and if his performance review comes back positive it should be no less than 1 month salary

    I'd say 3 - 5% based on performance

It's a double-edged sword. He might hate the hours he will be on the road. The company's policy or the demands by schools regarding bribes. If he is serious about accomplishing something at those schools, he might become pretty frustrated pdq!

No 8-4 day for him. Can't see him flying everywhere, then renting a car. Next week, I'm expected to sleep 2 nights on buses as I will have to go to Bangkok. Don't like this: isn't it a form of work?

Arriving at 5 am, then take a shower and sign the book at 7 am... That's tough.

Add the chances of this stint being a short one. All it takes for pent-up anger to boil over and lead to some schools cancelling their contracts.

Yeah, we both decided to go elsewhere now, he's going to Sudi working for the US government earning 4 times as much as he would here and after the non extension of my waiver I'm off to Saudi for 3 times the amount of money.

I won't like it out there I'm sure but I need some cheese for later life!
